A. Mouse Support
The CD-ROM Access System provides support for any Microsoft
compatible mouse. It does require your mouse driver be
loaded prior to executing the software.
To select an option from the Menu Bar, place the mouse cursor
on the object and double click. All options may be selected
in this manner.
To scroll forward or backward through a view, click on the
arrows at the top or bottom of the scroll bar which is
located to the right of your screen.
B. Normal Key Functions
The CD-ROM Access System presents text, graphics and
supporting information via "views". Each view,
including this help view; consists of continuous text.
Accordingly, your normal cursor keys work as you would
expect to let you browse and read a view's text.
The HOME key will take you to the beginning of a VIEW
and the END key will take you to the end of a VIEW. The
DOWN and UP arrows move directionally one line at a
time, and the PGUP-PGDN keys move one screen at a time.
C: Copy ■ Extract
Once you have located the file description on the screen,
place the light-bar cursor on the line you wish to copy or
extract and then press the "Enter" key. This will display
the drop down the file menu.
Your options are:
* Copy Copies files as stored on the CD-ROM.
* Extract Not used with this product.
* View Display Picture or "ZIP" file contents.
See "View" under the Help Topic.
The Copy and Extract options operate in a similar manner. If
you didn't have the current line marker positioned on a valid
line, a pop-up window will be displayed that explains the
error. Read this explanation and then press any key to
continue.
The program prompts for a destination. This normally would
be one of your floppy drives, but it can be any legal drive
or directory combination you want. If the directory does not
exist it will be created.
D: Using The Menu Bar
The MENU BAR provides drop down menus to access the special
features of the CD-ROM Access System.

E: TROUBLE SHOOTING
BACKGROUND
==============
The Digital Tours Access System (software interface) employs
SOSVIEW.EXE as the graphic file viewer. Even though
SOSVIEW.EXE has a reputation for being easy to use and
trouble-free, occasionally you may experience difficulties.
This error list reference is provided to assist you in
diagnosis of many possible problems and their solutions.
START UP
============
Selecting Video Drivers Using PICKDRVR.EXE
Video drivers for the correct video card MUST be installed to
operate the program correctly. For convenience, use
PICKDRVR.EXE to install the drivers from a menu-driven
utility. If a driver is listed which directly supports your
video card, select that driver from the PICKDRVR.EXE list. If
no direct support video driver is listed and your video card
is VESA compatible, select the VESA driver from the
PICKDRVR.EXE list. If you are uncertain which video card is
present in your computer, consult your system manual, or
package of manuals which you received with your computer.
< SPECIAL NOTE > Most newer video cards are now VESA Compatible
SVGA. Many of these cards are BIOS compatible, which means
that the cards can autodetect (recognize) VESA compatible
"calls" without any additional user modifications. Some older
cards may require loading an additional software driver to
force the video card into VESA mode. These software drivers
and the necessary instructions should be found with the
manual and disk which came with your video card or computer.
TROUBLE SHOOTING <> Common Error Messages and What They Mean
==================================================================
ERROR: CANNOT FIND GRAPHIC MODE FOR THIS IMAGE
A. Video drivers for the correct video card MUST be installed
to operate the program correctly. For convenience, use
PICKDRVR.EXE to install the drivers from a menu-driven
utility.
B. Video card may not have enough video RAM. Most of the
useful SVGA video modes require at least 512K video RAM.
Note: 512k video RAM required to view images 640x480x256
1 Mb video RAM required to view images 1024x768x256
ERROR: (No error message will report)
If you are using a DOS shell such as Windows, XTREE,
1DIRPLUS, or DesqView, you may want to leave the shell and
return to DOS. SOSVIEW routines are well behaved, but, any
co-existing shell or TSR usage runs the risks of excessive
memory allocation or internal contention that could lock up
the PC. SOSVIEW routines do direct screen writes which may
cause contention with ill-behaved TSRs. When SOSVIEW
routines give you error messages relating to OUT OF MEMORY or
inability to allocate memory for buffers, the shell or
terminate-and-stay-resident utilities are hogging precious
RAM and preventing from correct operation. Well-known ill-
behaved TSRs like SIDEKICK are definitely at risk for
crashing when attempting to co-exist with database
applications. Microsoft WINDOWS 2.11 or older will NOT work
with SOSVIEW routines. All versions of DESQview, including
DV/X are known to not correctly restore or refresh SuperVGA
graphic mode screens upon returning to a graphic process
(after swapping to another process). This is a DESQview
problem and occurs even with DESQview-specific or DESQview-
aware programs running in SVGA graphics modes. Unless your
graphic mode application can refresh its own graphics screen,
there is no currently known solution. The graphic mode
process works correctly except for this problem and only when
swapped out. It does not crash. Quarterdeck Systems is
working on this problem.
ERROR: (No error message will report)
MONITORS: 800x600 at higher require analog, multisync/or
analog fixed frequency Monitors that support the desired
video modes. Incorrect display, rolling of picture, jumbled
image, distortion and severe monitor damage may result from
over-driving monitor. Even though monitor may appear to
support the desired modes, some video cards can easily over
drive inexpensive monitors, even those claiming to support
the desired modes, because they are high performance and
require greater bandwidth than monitor can support (C&T 453
chipsets, etc) Some SVGA cards have dip-switches or jumpers
to "throttle back" or reduce the bandwidth to fit
capabilities of inexpensive monitors. This is a different
parameter than the 8-bit/16-bit mode of operation jumpers.
Video Cards NOT currently supported:
SIERRA High Color (32,768 palette 16-bit)
